PUP addresses Guatemalans’ illegal incursions into Belize

The Sarstoon River is not the only location in Belize that we have seen Guatemalans illegally entering the country. Along the western border, evidence of Guatemalans’ incursions and illegal clearing of Belize’s fertile land have been documented on many occasions. Recently Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) discovered large clearings of land in the Chiquibul done by Guatemalans. Last week, villagers of Otoxha and Dolores in the Toledo held a meeting to make plans to clear the border and stop further illegal clearings by Guatemalans. PUP Leader John Briceno is calling on the Government to deploy BDF soldiers to the area to investigate and act accordingly.

John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “We are even more concerned over reports of illegal farming by Guatemalans on our side of the border in the areas of Dolores and Otoxa. The chairman of Otoxa  has made a report and I call on the Government to send in the BDF to investigate and proceed without hesitation to dismantle any illegal farms or crops in accordance with Annex B of the framework agreement on confidence building measures. It is our responsibility to exercise our full territorial integrity over our land. Now is not the time for us to be turning a blind eye to any illegal activity along our borders with Guatemala.”
