November is Universal Children’s Month and activities on a national level includes a Children’s Parliament on the 20th November to coincide with Universal Children’s Day. In addition, the Ministry of Local Government is also hosting an awards ceremony to recognize outstanding children from across Belize as well as municipalities that has made significant advancement in the Sustainable Child Friendly Municipalities of Belize Initiative. San Pedro Town won one of the highest awards and this year, for the second consecutive year, they are hosting a month of activities with children. Our San Pedro Correspondent has the details in the following report.

“Children of today, keepers of tomorrow” is the international theme for Universal Children’s Month. One municipality who has put the children’s agenda in the forefront of the November calendar of events is San Pedro Town. Events started with the annual Mayor’s message for Universal Children’s Month, the launch of the calendar of activities on the local radio, the distribution of gift hampers by the Children’s Advisory Body and the Mayor’s annual visit to all primary schools among many other activities. In his message, Mayor Daniel Guerrero said that there is a lot to celebrate, even more so that it is the thirtieth anniversary of the passage and ratification of the convention on the rights of the child.

Daniel Guerrero, Mayor of San Pedro Town: “At the San Pedro Town Council join the Universal Celebration by recommitting to our national and global commitments which is to improve child welfare in our community, promote and celebrate children’s rights and promote togetherness and awareness amongst all children. To celebrate the country’s 30th anniversary of signing onto the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child our council has adopted a month of activities for the third consecutive year. This demonstrates our commitment to our children who are our keepers of tomorrow. This brings into sharp focus our fulfillment to our manifesto promise to our electorates and children of Ambergris Caye and our active participation in the sustainable child friendly initiative.

In his message, Mayor Guerrero called on the business and private sectors to put the children’s agenda at the forefront of their social commitments.

Daniel Guerrero, Mayor of San Pedro Town: “I invite our community, learning institutions, NGOs, public and private sectors to join the San Pedro Town Council in putting the children’s agenda at the forefront of your social commitments. The work to build a better world for our children continues. We acknowledge that the children of today are our keepers of tomorrow.”

Activities for Universal Children’s Month on Ambergris Caye will end on November 29th with an all day town fair at the San Pedro Central Park where stakeholders will offer several services such as birth registration and testing for Type II diabetes in children. The fair will end in the afternoon with a quiz competition for primary school students.
