10 schools in Belize City went head to head in a trivia competition to see who knows more about the coastal zones in Belize. The Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI) held its sixth annual Trivia Challenge for primary schools as part of their Coastal Awareness Week 2019. The week is filled with events that started yesterday under the theme “building coastal resilience through innovation.” Love News spoke with Gilbert Andrews, Environmental Lab Technician for CZMAI, who told us the importance of the Trivia Challenge and the Awareness week.

Gilbert Andrews, Environmental Lab Technician, CZMAI: “We want to raise more awareness for our children. It’s time for our children now to get as much knowledge as possible so that they can bring it into the future because we are living in a changing world and other countries already know about certain climate change issues and so if we can mold them from a young age they can have a good grasp on the importance of preserving what they have now for future generations. These are more science based questions and the schools that participated in this year’s competition we have Holy Redeemer Primary School, Queen Square, Anglican Primary School, All Saints Primary School, Belize Elementary School, Bernice York, St.Luke Methodist, St.Ignatius Primary School and St.Joseph Primary School. On Friday we have an innovation fair where different agencies will come and display the best booths. We need to raise more awareness because climate change is real and if we do not prepare now we’ll lose everything that we have. Everything is changing at a rapid pace so we need to educate everybody, children, average workers, everybody.”

The contest was held at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts. The first place winner is Kimaya Charley of Holy Redeemer RC School, Second Place is Victoria Quan of Belize Elementary School and third place is Amera Castillo of St. Ignatius RC School. First prize award is $500, second prize is $300 and third prize is $200.
