The Great House Inn has quite a legacy behind it. It was built in 1927 for Barney Melhado, a prominent merchant of Belize whose family was of Portuguese origin. Between the late 1940’s and early 1970’s, it underwent several changes of ownership until 1972 when it came into Steve Maestre’s possession. Maestre was once the assistant manager of Fort George and thought he knew enough to venture out on his own so he opened the Great House. Love news spoke with Maestre, who said that today the Great House is celebrating twenty years of excellent service.
Steve Maestre – Owner/Manager The Great House
“It’s been twenty years and as Tourism has grown in the country we expanded, we’re still small, very small and there are times we could use more rooms, there are also times when we can use fewer rooms so it’s a balance and I figured that I would stay relatively small and keep upgrading so we’ve done a lot of upgrading built. Well, we have one, in fact, I think it’s three years already now; Service Sight Excellence Award from trip advisor. We’ve won the Excellent Award from booking.com.”

“How has it been with the competition?”
“Well you’re never going to stop competition, the industry has to grow, I’m right across from the Radisson, best place to be because you want to be seen, if you have good products you want to be seen and I think the more hotels the more people we bring so unless we overdo it I don’t think we should be afraid of competition.”
The Great House was recognized for its excellent service by two international organizations, TripAdvisor and Booking.com.
