Three men charged with the manslaughter of Demetrio Pott

Demetrio Pott, the man who was beaten in late April, died on Saturday. Last week police formally arrested and charged three men for that incident. Carlos Westby, Deltran Perez, and Leodigario Chan were charged for dangerous harm. Westby and Chan were additionally charged for wounding Pott’s brother, Adan. Today however, Police say the men have had these charges upgraded following Pott’s death over the weekend.

ACP Joseph Myvette: “Police have since arrested the three persons who were previously arrested: Deltran Perez, Carlos Westby and LeoDegardo Chan have since been arrested for the crime of manslaughter.”

Reporter: So those charged were upgraded. The Attorney for two of the accused claims that in fact the injuries were caused by the accident which they said had an enormous impact and two the say both of the Pot brothers were inebriated. Have you all looked at it I mean in terms of have you all confirmed that the injuries are consistent with the trauma of a beat down as opposed the trauma of an accident.

ACP Joseph Myvette: “Well I believe the post mortem should be schedule today or sometime this week in relation to that.”

Pott and his brother reportedly crashed into another vehicle in Trial Farm Village after which the accused ambushed him and inflicted a severe beating on him. He was hospitalized since then in a critical condition until his death over the weekend. The Police Department’s Professional Standards Branch has also launched an investigation into the case after Pott’s family reported that Orange Walk Police failed to take Pott’s statement of the incident when he was still conscious.
