In the matter of Government payments to tour operators for taxes previously acquired on tour services and cruise lines, last October, Government was ordered by the Caribbean Court of Justice to return taxes it had collected. In response, in a sitting of the House, government introduced an amendment to the General Sales Tax which seeks to block tour operators from collecting monies. But how much money must be returned? Financial Secretary Joseph Waight explained.
Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary: “It’s a moving figure, it’s in the low, below ten million dollars. It is in court I cannot say much more. We are hopeful that the court will uphold the actions of the Government of Belize.”
