The 14 Annual Reef Week, scheduled to run from March 15 to March 22 is set to be a celebration of the Belize Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders. Under the theme “Building Resilience from Ridge to Reef,” this year’s event promises to highlight the interconnectedness of Belize’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems while emphasizing the critical role the reef plays in the nation’s economy, environment, and cultural heritage. Organized by a coalition of local NGOs, tourism partners, and business allies, Reef Week 2025 will feature a week-long series of engaging activities designed to inspire conservation efforts and foster a deeper connection to Belize’s marine resources. Love News spoke with Communications Coordinator of Wildlife Conservation Belize, Deseree Arzu who explained that the event aims to unite Belizeans and visitors alike in the shared mission of protecting the reef for future generations.
Reef Week will also emphasize hands-on community involvement. Volunteers will participate in coastal and underwater clean-ups to remove debris and protect marine life. Additionally, the beloved “Ride to the Reef” cycling event will return, encouraging participants to pedal their way to the coast while promoting sustainable transportation. The week will culminate in an educational fair in San Ignacio Town on March 22. The fair will feature interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and presentations by marine biologists, conservationists, and local stakeholders. Arzu expressed that attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the latest efforts to protect the reef, explore sustainable livelihood options, and discover how they can contribute to conservation efforts.
The Belize Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
