16-year-old Student Murdered in Belize City

Police in Belize City are investigating the shooting murder of 16-year-old Wellington Williams on Saturday night. Williams, a student, was on Central American Boulevard, heading toward the Belize Port Authority compound to deliver food, when he was attacked. Investigators say that two men on separate bicycles approached Williams and fired several shots in his direction. Hipolito Novelo has more on this tragic incident.

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Sixteen Year Old Wellington William’s life was cut extremely short on Saturday afternoon after two men shot him dead. The Belize City student was on Central American Boulevard heading toward the Belize Port Authority area to deliver food when at about six forty five two men on separate bicycles approached him pulling out firearms and shooting in his direction. Williams died on the scene. But who would want a sixteen year old high school student dead ?

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “I know that police officers are following several leads but for us to say that a motive has been established it’s not there as yet but I can tell you that investigators have been canvassing the area from Saturday and we have some useful information that we believe could bring some form of closure to us.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: And closure is what the family needs. Williams’ sister Florence says he was on his way to deliver food, something he usually does. She says he was shot eight times.

Florence Williams, Sister of Deceased: “He was here and he just left the yard to deliver food for my aunt which he normally does for the men back by port. He is the one that normally delivered the food for her. He left the yard on a bicycle and he was riding to the port when he was ambushed by two men on a bicycle and that’s when they fired eight shots at him which eight of them caught him and he was trying to come back home and he fell and he called for one of my aunts that had just reached the yard and that’s how they got him in a vehicle and they rushed him to the hospital. When we reached them my mom told us that he was in surgery and a couple minutes later they called her in to tell her that he had passed.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: And that news sent shockwaves across the country. A teenaged student murdered in Belie City motive yet to be established. Tonight his family in desperate search for answers.

Florence Williams, Sister of Deceased: “ He never complained about anyone targeting him. He never said anything. No one came to us saying that they have issues with him or he have any beef with anyone out there but so we don’t know anything.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: But one thing she does know, her brother did not deserve to be murdered.

Florence Williams, Sister of Deceased: “My little brother was a very loving person. He was kind, he was happy, he always made everyone laugh. He was willing to help every and anyone no matter if he just met you he will help you. That was the kind of person he was. He was going to church the youth group every Sunday because normally I call my mom and she’d be like “Oh he went to church.” so he is not the type to be out on the street gang banging or anything so we don’t really know why this happened. To tell you the truth we forgive you and we leave it in God’s hands whatever God wants to do with you that’s up to him. All we want right now is to lay my brother to rest and let him be at peace.”
