A Caye Caulker family is reeling from a tragic stabbing incident that left one of their own dead and another hospitalized. Last night, sometime around 11 o’clock, 17-year-old Isaac Marin was sleeping in his home on Luciano Reyes Street when his mentally ill cousin reportedly came into the room and stabbed him. As this was happening, Marin’s brother, Carlos, tried to stop their cousin but instead, he too was injured. Marin was pronounced dead on arrival at the Caye Caulker Polyclinic. His brother was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). The incident shook the village community as murders are rare in Caye Caulker and the Marin family is well known. According to the island’s chairlady, Seleny Villanueva Pott, the family is closely knit, and they are still unsure of what triggered last night’s tragedy.
Seleny Villanueva Pott, Chairlady, Caye Caulker Village Council: “We’re not very certain of all the details but what we know did happen is that there was a stabbing incident of a young man in his bedroom while he was sleeping by his cousin who is a mentally ill patient- what triggered the incident we don’t know. His older brother walked in when everything was transpiring and he intervened and he himself was injured. He’s presently in the hospital in a stable condition. The family is one of the biggest families on the island, the Marins are one of the biggest and first settlers of the island so they’re very well known, a closely knit family and we want to take the opportunity to extend our condolences to the family in this difficult time.
Reporter: How well did you know the victim that died? Can you tell me anything about him ?
Seleny Villanueva Pott, Chairlady, Caye Caulker Village Council: “He was as very, he’s young he’s 17 years old. He’s what we called our typical caye boy, he loved fishing, comes from a very big family, is very loving to his sisters, several siblings in that family so they were very closely knit. He enjoyed the sea a lot, he enjoyed fishing and diving and snorkeling so he was what we consider a typical caye boy and again we’re so deeply sorry for the loss of the family.”
Chairlady Seleny Pott says the alleged stabber, Jamie Marin, was staying with the family and had worked with them and hang out at the house. Love News sought to get a comment from the family but they declined.
