21 Belizeans Deported on U.S. Government Charter Flight

A United States government-chartered Airbus A320 landed at the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Ladyville shortly after 11 a.m. today, carrying approximately 150 passengers. While most were in transit to South American destinations such as Peru and Chile, 21 of them were Belizean nationals, returning home, not by choice, but as part of the mass deportation by US President Trump.  Today’s flight marks the first time that Belizean nationals have been repatriated on a U.S. charter flight rather than through the usual commercial routes. According to Luke Martin, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belize, the move was part of a cost-efficient initiative.

Luke Martin, Public Affairs Office, United States Embassy: “So this was not knocking down doors and walking into houses. These were people that were all in the United States illegally. The majority of them had crossed into the United States illegally and then the rest of them were overstays, had visas and they overstayed as well. And the majority of them did have some kind of criminal offense in the United States as well. In a lot of ways, this is a new message to Belize. I think other Central American countries have heard this before through past administrations, that illegal immigration is not something that’s tolerated. This has always been the law. So the difference is, you know coming here it’s a different optic with a charter plane coming in. Everybody notices it. It becomes big news.  But still, illegal immigration is not something that has been tolerated. There’s a zero tolerance policy.  Again, due process, legal appeals, people have the right to do that for different reasons as well.”

Martin emphasized that the deportations followed due process. He noted that the majority of those on the flight had either entered the United States illegally or overstayed their visas. Many also had committed criminal offenses. There were no children on this flight. However, Martin mentioned that in neighboring countries like Honduras, some family units have opted for voluntary return under self-deportation programs.

Luke Martin, Public Affairs Office, United States Embassy: “If the administration is moving towards charter flights, it’s more cost effective to have a number of people, rather than just one offs and two offs on regular United and American flights coming here. We had some that were entered as late as January of this year, I saw some. Some were there for many years as well, working, etc.  Some were incarcerated there as well. So there’s a whole range of them, just like there’s a whole range of ways they came in some crossed the border illegally from California into Texas, and that’s how.”

Upon arrival, the 21 Belizeans were taken to the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City for processing. Most have already been released. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration issued a formal press release confirming its involvement. The Ministry, along with the Belize Police Department and the Belizean Embassy in Washington, coordinated efforts to verify the identities of the returnees and ensure all necessary travel documents were in place. This charter flight may signal the beginning of a broader shift in U.S. deportation strategy in the region. Martin confirmed that similar flights could become more common, citing their logistical and economic advantages.
