24-year-old Devon Nicholas will be spending two years away from his newborn baby after he was found guilty of firearm offenses. Nicholas was sentenced to two years imprisonment today by Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford after he was found guilty on two charges, namely: “kept firearm without a gun license and kept ammunition without a gun license”. During the trial, two police officers testified that on October 31, 2017, at about 10:45 p.m., while conducting operations on Tibruce Street in Belize City, they observed Nicholas throwing an object inside a yard. The officers took Nicholas to retrieve the object and discovered that it was a point 38 revolver with three live rounds of ammunition. Consequently, Nicholas was arrested and charged. When Nicholas took the stand in his defense, he told the court that he has no knowledge of the firearm. Furthermore, he asked to court to have mercy on him since he recently became a father.  Senior Magistrate Ford told him that the minimum sentence for firearm offense is five years; however, she will only sentence him to two years since he has asked the court for leniency.
