Despite seeing the first half of 2019 conclude, the Belize Police Department is yet to issue a mid-term report for the year. By our count, however, we can tell you that there have been sixty-four murders so far with the majority of them taking place in Belize City and with Orange Walk being the least violent districts, having reported only one homicide. Of the sixty-four murder victims for 2019, fifty-five of them were males and six were females. The age ranges differ with the youngest being 18-year-old and the eldest being 74-years-old. While we are uncertain how this compares to the same period in 2018, we can tell you that we have seen a significant decrease in cases of rape and carnal knowledge, but we have seen increases in fatal road traffic incidents, burglaries, robberies and shooting incidents. To give you an overview by area we can tell you that the Belize District had forty four cases; Cayo District had ten; Corozal had two; the Stann Creek District had two and the Toledo District had five. Noteworthy is that an increase in arrests has occurred but successful prosecution is another matter.
