77-Year-Old Woman Killed While Crossing Philip Goldson Highway

A 77-year-old woman lost her life in a traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City on Thursday morning.  The victim has been identified as Erlene Elizabeth Gillett, a retired resident of the Burrell Boom area. Police say the accident occurred at approximately 11:27 near Enrique Martinez and Sons Limited. Preliminary investigations indicate that Gillett was crossing the highway from the direction of My Light Store when she reportedly stepped from the median into the path of a gold Dodge Caravan travelling from Ladyville towards Belize City.  The vehicle, driven by 58-year-old Gregory Nicholas, struck Gillett. She sustained injuries to her head and body and was later pronounced dead. Her body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and later taken to the morgue, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.  The Dodge Caravan sustained damage to its hood and windshield.  Police processed the scene and obtained a blood sample from Nicholas. He was also served with a notice of intended prosecution as the investigation continues.
