80 Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtles hatch on Tobacco Caye

On Thursday night, 80 critically endangered Hawksbill Sea turtles successfully hatched and made their way into the sea at Tobacco Caye, a small island off the coast of Belize. This marks a significant success in ongoing conservation efforts to protect these species from the brink of extinction. Volunteers and conservationists were on the baby turtles’ safe journey from the beach to the water, improving their chances of survival. Among the helpers were Andy Aspinall and Antonio Chub, who aided in guiding the hatchlings to the sea. Hawksbill turtles continue to face severe threats due to habitat loss, illegal poaching, and the escalating impacts of climate change. Belize’s beaches, including Tobacco Caye, are important nesting grounds for these endangered creatures.
