The last we heard on the progress of the State of Emergency for the south side Belize City was that ninety-nine persons had been detained. An early morning operation was held on Tuesday with several units of the Belize Police Department picking up the known criminals and trouble makers. The idea is to have them remanded to the Belize Central Prison following a noted spike in robberies and other major crimes. Police Commissioner explained to the media that while they did detain close to one hundred persons only a small percentage will remain in custody.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The Anti Gang Task Force and GSU are going through the list sifting out those who we don’t think need to go up at this time. Like I said we want to be fair to people, if it is that they’re not a part of what is happening causing the havoc in our streets then we don’t want to capture them at this time. We’re going to give them that opportunity to continue to do the good things that they’re doing and I think so far our list of persons who are expected to go to prison today because the Minister is going to sign the detention orders very shortly and those persons who will go up will be a total of twenty seven persons. There are still a few persons from the list of persons that need to go to prison who are part of what is happening but we have not had them in custody so we’re still working on apprehending some of them. We’re going to put out those wanted posters today like we did the last time and seek the public’s assistance in locating them. If it that they’re in a crab hole we’re going to dig them out, wherever they go we’re going to find them.”
