A San Pedro resident drowns

MCFADZEAN RTA.00_09_23_02.Still017

A Belizean laborer drowned on Friday afternoon in San Pedro.

A Belizean laborer drowned on Friday afternoon in San Pedro.  We join our Island Correspondent, Jorge Aldana for the details.

San Pedro Police are investigating a case of drowning that occurred off the coast of Ambergris Caye. The victim has been identified as 25 year old Gustavo Lizarraga Jr, a resident of the DFC area of San Pedro Town but originally from the Orange Walk district. Police say that sometime around 2:45PM on Friday November 8 they visited the Dr.Otto Rodriguez San Pedro PolyClinic II where they observed the lifeless body of a Hispanic male later identified as Lizarraga a Belizean construction worker. Initial police investigation reveals that at about midday the same day of the unfortunate incident Gustavo Lizarraga Jr along with his cousin 36 year old Roberto Lizarraga, a Belizean welder of Sea Horse Drive in San Pedro Town both left from the shores between Mata Rock and Victoria House Resorts. The duo left to the barrier reef in an area south of San Pedro Town approximately one and a half miles away from the shore to do some fishing. They were on board a green kayak. Roberto told police that at about forty five minutes into their fishing expedition the sea waves began getting bigger and bigger. At that point they decided to return to shore however larger swells from the wave began pounding their kayak causing water to get inside. Police say that the surviving cousin reported that at that point the kayak began to sink. Desperate for their lives the two cousins began to swim towards the shore. Police say that Roberto reported that Gustavo mentioned to him that he could not make it to shore. The two then decided to swim back towards the kayak which was semi floating out of the water and hung on. Police say that Roberto reported that Gustavo did not have the strength to swim toward shore and so Roberto volunteered to swim toward shore to seek help. Upon arriving at Victoria House Resort about an hour later Roberto was assisted by a boat from the resort in trying to locate his cousin out at sea. On their arrival where the kayak was seen floating Gustavo was nowhere to be seen and the search party expanded their search area at sea. A few minutes into their search the search party came across the body of Gustavo Lizarraga Jr. floating face down in the water. His body was retrieved and taken to the Dr.Otto Rodriguez San Pedro PolyClinic II where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body awaits a post mortem examination meanwhile police investigations continue.”
