Accountant Charged with Obtaining Property by Deception in Belize City

An accountant was charged with obtaining property by deception in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Thirty-one-year-old, Hugo Lizama, appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola, accused of stealing eighteen hundred dollars from Evanna Zapata. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and his attorney, Aldo Salazar informed the court that the virtual complainant was outside the courtroom ready to withdraw the charges. Police Prosecutor Sgt. Christopher Smith addressed the court explaining that the proper procedure for a complainant to withdraw a charge begins with them making a formal statement to police, which was not done. Lizama was granted bail in the sum of twenty five hundred dollars and is scheduled to return to court on July 12.
