Accused land scammer Doris Grant will have a preliminary inquiry next year to determine if her charges of theft will go to trial. Grant appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court recently, where she was presented with sixteen additional pages of disclosure for evidence the prosecution intends to use against her. Grant has forty charges against her and is accused of stealing over a hundred and twenty-one thousand dollars from various people. The court set February 19, 2025. Grant’s legal troubles began in mid-May when she was arraigned on 40 counts, including obtaining property by deception and theft. While she was initially granted bail of $50,000, the case has been complicated by subsequent charges. In June, just a month after her theft arraignment, Grant was charged with being a member of the Southside Side Gang, an allegation police say links her and her common-law husband, Austin Oliver Underwood, to organized criminal activity. The gang-related charges were filed mere days after Grant was shot and injured in what police suspect was a targeted attack. The gang case is still pending in the lower court. Grant’s path through the legal system has been turbulent. Following her initial bail, she was remanded again under a 90-day State of Emergency in June 2024. That curfew expired in September, allowing her and Underwood to post $5,000 bail each and secure their release from the Belize Central Prison.
