A Belize City resident accused of murder was freed on Tuesday in the Magistrate’s Court. 37-year-old, Leon Garcia was set free after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions asked that the charges be dropped. No reason was offered for the withdrawal. Garcia was on remand for the past five months at the Belize Central Prison. He was one of two persons accused of killing 31-year-old, Ian Westby in October 2021. The other accused is 26-year-old, Akeem Augustine who remains on remand. The victim, who resided in Placencia, was in Belize City with a relative when he was shot near a car wash at the corner of Peter Seco Street and Central American Boulevard. Westby was reportedly socializing on that Sunday with plans to return home to the peninsula later that day. He was shot once to the chest and was pronounced dead at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
