Accused robber Ronald Gibson dies after being shot

Belmopan resident, Ronald Gibson is dead after being hospitalized for the past 11 days.  The 49-year-old man was shot in the abdomen on Saturday, April 6 inside the Independence Park. He was under Police guard and was to be charged once released from the Western Regional Hospital.  Those charges won’t be levied now as Gibson passed away at around midnight last night.  It is a story that leaves many questions unanswered.  Last night, Gibson’s sister, Shawn Gardiner, spoke to Love News about the family’s plan to sue the shooter, Gilda Abadi.  Gardiner says they were waiting for Gibson to recover to pursue legal recourse.  From the investigation’s perspective, Police Commissioner Chester Williams, told the media today that Abadi did not show excessive force when he shot Gibson.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “From all indications the investigation is showing that the lady acted in defense of herself and her child. It happened that the person died a couple days after so what we’ll do is what we normally would do is to put together the file and we send it to the DPP. The woman and her child were together. The man accosted them to rob them. She ordered him to stop. He continued to make moves towards her. Generally a man is stronger than a woman. She was armed with a weapon. Imagine him approaching her and would have been able to hold onto her, get ahold of her firearm he certainly would have overpowered her, would have taken away that gn and maybe would have killed her. I don’t forsee an instance where her actions would not be deemed justified but I’m not going to be the arbiter of that issue. It is going to be left to the DPP but from my legal standpoint I do not see how that could happen. I believe she acted in self defense.”

Gibson’s death now changes the plans and confidence the family had to pursue a lawsuit.  In speaking with our newsroom today, the sister was uncertain of the next move.  As a matter of fact, Gardiner says they are focusing on laying her brother to rest.

Shawn Gardiner, Sister of Ronald Gibson: “We can’t just leave it like that to slide. I want to know details with my brother from bottom to top. We’re trying to gather some money to bury him, you know ? That’s the mission we’re on right now. Well it’s difficult because I really want to know what really transpired. I mean it’s like a puzzle because I’ve been hearing all kinds of stuff. I stopped, Home in the market area the other day and he told me it was not the lady that shot my brother so I really don’t know. It’s more questions than answers you know ? So that’s what I’m looking for but like the lady said she already told on herself that she did it so well she has to pay for the consequence that she did if she is guilty. If anyone wants to help with something we’re gonna appreciate it but me personally I don’t want anything from that lady. I don’t think my family either. All I want is justice.”

The shooting incident happened on the night of Saturday, April 6 at around eight o’clock when Abadi and her daughter were walking home from a football game.  According to Abadi, she felt threatened and feared that harm would come to her daughter.  She said she had warned Gibson to back off, but he reportedly kept advancing at them which led to her firing her licensed firearm.  On the flip side to that story, multiple indications by Gibson’s friends and relatives, he has never been in trouble with the law, and the entire ordeal has come as a shock to those who knew him as a humble and hardworking individual.
