Acres of Cane Destroyed by Fire; Owner Suspects Arson

There was a fire at a cane field in the Cayo District yesterday evening.  The property owner is now claiming arson as there is a current dispute with nearby farm owners.  Love News understands that as many as ten acres of cane were destroyed.  Cayo Correspondent Fem Cruz spoke with Gilbert Canton the Manager of the Valley of Peace Farm.

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: Last week we reported to you about the rising tensions in Valley of Peace Village between the Valley of Peace Farms Limited and the Valley of Peace Farmers Association. Over the weekend number B50 cane field belonging to Valley of Peace Farms Limited was set on fire. The manager Gilbert Canton Jr is alleging arson, he believes that the fire is connected to last week’s tensions with the farmers of Valley of Peace. We spoke to Ever Blandon, the president of the Valley of Peace Farmers Association about the incident.

Ever Blandon, President, Valley of Peace Farmers Association

Ever Blandon, President, Valley of Peace Farmers Association: “This weekend we saw some sugar cane burning and that is nothing to do with the far mers. Farmers don’t have time to do those things. We want a peaceful resolution to this even though the farmers are not happy with what is happening. What we want is this air spraying close to the village to stop. The farmers are not asking for compensation of the damage the only thing that they are asking is that this could stop. None of my farmers are involved with that arson that Mr.Canton is accusing our farmers which he is accusing our farmers with no evidence but farmers are committed to be in peace with the company our neighbor so we’re just having peace with him. What we want the country to know is that Valley of Peace is a peaceful village and we are now awaiting the decision of a court so we are awaiting the decision of a court to move this issue with Valley of Peace Farms.”
