Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: A COVID-19 outbreak has been identified at the Palm Centre in Belmopan. To get an update on the present situation Love News spoke to Mellissa Diaz from the Ministry of Health.
Dr.Melissa Diaz, Acting Director of Health Services: “We were notified yesterday of an outbreak that has occurred at the Palm Centre in Belmopan. We have twenty seven residents there and of the twenty seven residents twenty one tested positive for COVID and seven of our Ministry of Health staff at the Palm Centre. Immediately a team had gone in – we are not certain of who the index case is or how the infection got to Palm Centre but we do know that as soon as one of the patients presented with symptoms they were tested immediately and a team from Western Health Region went into Palm Centre and did a complete testing of all staff and all patients at Palm Centre and the results – it was rapid testing – and the results came out quite quickly after. Immediately there was a meeting held between the managers there and the staff working there and with our team here from the headquarters as well and a plan is in place in order to ensure that persons have been checked regularly by the medical doctor, the nurses working there have been placed on symptomatic treatment, will be monitored regularly and the positive cases have been isolated apart from the negative cases. Hopefully with the daily checkups with the medications already started we will ensure that most of the or all of the patients there continue to do well; some are asymptomatic and some mild at this point but we do know that we are very early in the outbreak so it’s something that we’re monitoring on a close basis.”
Love News understands that staff and residents who do not have serious symptoms have been isolated but not hospitalized. Patients who tested negative have been relocated to another building on the property.
