The Ministry of Health also provided updates on other vector infections rates. A new virus, Mayaro Fever, was recently detected in the Caribbean and the Ministry is observing cases that may be related to Mayaro fever. Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services, spoke about the new virus.
DR MARVIN MANZANERO
“We can’t take off the radar that there is a new viral disease that is now being spread. Mayaro fever associated to the same mosquito is a fever that was predominantly found in parts of Bolivia, Ecuador and Brazil but now there has been a case in the island of Hispaniola and there could be more cases. As you will look at the data you will note that 88% of the cases that we are testing are turning out to be negative for dengue, chikungunya and Zika and that is not only in Belize that is in the entire Caribbean. I think CARFA is talking about 95% of the tests that are being run are in point of fact negative for viruses.”
Dr. Manzanero stated that MOH cannot be a hundred percent sure that Mayaro Fever is not present in Belize and they are looking at some cases closely.
