Valentine Baptist, who was accused of the murder of 19-year-old Devin Parham, is finally on trial. The murder was committed over three years ago. Baptist’s is being represented by Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson and the case is being heard before Justice Colin Williams in a trial without a jury. Today, Senior Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell called the arresting officer to testify who recounted to the court how he managed to arrest the accused. Two statements were also read into evidence including the statement of Parham’s cousin, who was the last person to see Parham alive. In his statement, Parham’s cousin recalled that on July 6, 2016, they were walking home when they saw a male person by Mortar’s Alley and Cemetery Road in Belize City. Upon seeing the man reaching for an object in his pants, he realized that it was a gun and began to run for his life. While running he heard eight to ten shots and later realized that his cousin was shot. The case was adjourned to December 10, 2019.
