In recent years, the conversation around the age of consent and legal sex age in Belize has gained significant traction. Currently, individuals aged 16 and above can legally engage in sexual activities. The law is a part of the broader effort to safeguard youth from exploitation while respecting their autonomy. There has been some clamor to increase the age to 18, but according to Minister Balderamos-Garcia, this is one portion of the laws they are not prepared to change.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Indigenous People’s Affairs, Families and Children: “One of our partners said well will be seeking to change the age of sexual consent, consent to sexual activity ? And I said no I don’t think we will go that far because policing something like that would be almost impossible. So the age of consent to sex is 16 but we would still encourage young people to stay in school, focus on your education, focus on making something of yourself before getting into a union.”
The ongoing discussions promise to shape a future where young Belizeans are both safeguarded and respected in their journey towards adulthood.
