The Minister of Agriculture says that the opposition’s decision to side with the Belize Sugar Industries, in the rejection of the new sugar regulations is their way of gaining cheap political points. Following BSI’s announcement, the LOO, Moses “Shyne” Barrow issued a statement saying that the move is unhealthy for the sugar industry and that laws and regulations should only be implemented after robust consultations with sugar industry stakeholders. However, the LOO’s statement was not meaningful according to Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture: “The UDP gaining political points? They need a lot of points. They’re in a bad shape. They’re in bad shape. I mean they need some points bad. They need to score many points right now. They need a leader first of all and they need to step up to the game. I mean an opposition is important in any democracy you know. I feel bad sometimes in the House of Representatives to have no one to debate with.”
