Agriculture Minister Visits Shrimp Farm in the South

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise is trying to add a breath of fresh air to Belize’s Shrimp Industry. In 2015, the industry was brought to its knees by the arrival of early mortality syndrome (EMS). The disease had affected shrimp farms across the county and resulted in Belize losing the ability to export shrimp to countries such as Mexico. However, the Briceno Administration, through a bilateral meeting with Mexican officials was able to get Belize back into Mexico’s database of shrimp-producing countries. The Ministry of Agriculture is expecting this year’s shrimp production to reach 2.5 million pounds which is valued at 12.5 million Belize dollars. According to the Minister of Agriculture, Jose Mai, the revitalization of the industry is attributed to technological advances being implemented by farmers. Today, while Minister Mai was touring the Royal Mayan Farms in the Stann Creek District he spoke about the economic benefits of bringing back Belize’s Shrimp Industry.
