Agriculture Sector Hit Hard by Tropical Storm Sara’s Impact

A major concern in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Sara is the storm’s impact on the agriculture sector. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise has deployed field officers to visit impacted areas and conduct damage assessments. CEO Servulo Baeza says the Cayo district is the primary area of concern, with farmers reporting damages to vegetable crops and sugar cane. Baeza says the ministry is also concerned about cattle producers in the Belize River Valley.

CEO Baeza says that assessment teams have been out since the all-clear and that it will take some time to compile the data to get the extent of the damage.

Baeza added that the sector may be further impacted as flood waters from neighboring countries flow into Belize.
