24-year-old Akeem Baptist was in court today for the preliminary inquiry stage of his trial.  Baptist is facing charges of use of deadly means of harm after he allegedly brought harm to his estranged common-law-wife.  Baptist was initially charged with aggravated assault with a knife; that charge was later upgraded, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.  According to the complainant, Amira Hernandez, Baptist tried to kill her on September 13, 2018.  She said that she was picked up by Baptist on her way home and was taken to Homeland Memorial where Baptist pistol-whipped her and used a knife to cut her on the neck and shoulder.  The matter was brought before Magistrate Aretha Ford ending in paper committal; meaning that there is sufficient evidence to take the matter to the Supreme Court for trial.  In this instance, Baptist was offered a new bail of ten thousand dollars plus two sureties of five thousand dollars each.
