Albert Area Rep. Tracy Panton Criticizes the PM’s Budget Presentation
Day two of the 2023-2024 budget debate got underway this morning at the National Assembly Building in Belmopan. Albert Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton was the second speaker to make her contributions to the budget debate. Panton criticized the Prime Minister’s budget presentation, saying the Briceno Administration has failed to provide a plan to fight inflation. Panton told the House that less fortunate Belizeans continue to suffer from the high cost of living. She said that Cabinet ministers continue to live in fantasy. Here is a portion of her presentation.
Hon. Tracy Panton, Area Representative, Albert Division: “Madam Speaker I listened carefully to the Prime Minister’s budget speech in the National Assembly on March 10th. Impotent on any new strategies to navigate the current economic times and what lies ahead. The PM in his usual fashion reverted to his status quo approach; beating his chest, blaming the United Democratic Party, offering no meaningful relief or real solutions for the crippling cost of living and paying more lip service to the Belizean people. I truly marveled Madam Speaker on how boisterous the Prime Minister was in his pronouncements of the historic economic performance of his administration. Completely aloof and devoid of the day to day realities on the ground. The Prime Minister has no idea what poverty feels like. Sleepless nights Madam Speaker for those who grapple with how they will continue to put food on the table, how they will continue to keep the lights on. How they will send their children to school, keep up with mortgage payments, have access to affordable healthcare services, how they will continue to address the family’s daily transportation arrangements and protect their livelihoods just to name a few. I hope Prime Minister that you and your Cabinet are not believing those fairytales you’re telling yourself based on this new rebasing exercise. Rebasing of the statistics Madam Speaker and comparing apples to oranges.”
