All escaped prisoners in the October 12 mass breakout are now accounted for. Police were able to recapture the last two over the weekend. Police Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed that Michael Faux and Erwin Lanza were captured on Sunday morning with the assistance of the public.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I am happy to say that we have now closed that chapter having recaptured all twenty eight of those escapees. You’d know that over the weekend police were able to capture Michael Faux and Erwin Lanza, they were found in the Ladyville area. They have since been charged with escaping from prison and are also expected to appear in court this morning. I want to take the opportunity to thank the public who helped us tremendously with information that led to the recapturing of all twenty eight prisoners as well as to thank the police officers who worked tirelessly to ensure that we were able to get those prisoners in prison where they belong making our country much safer. The law does not differentiate, you escape you escaped the only thing the court can maybe look at is the length of time that they were out and the amount of resources the state spent in their recapture and based on that the court may determine the extent of the punishment that they’re going to impose.”
The 28 men had escaped from the Belize Central Prison at sunset on Monday, October 12 after having tied up and assaulted several prison guards. Both Faux and Lanza will now face additional charges and will be returned to the prison.
