The United States Embassy in Belmopan has recognized Lieutenant Commander Alma Pinelo of the Belize Coast Guard as Belize’s Wonder Woman Spotlight for the month of July. Pinelo is the first female Acting Vice Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard. She was first attached to the Belize Defence Force in 2008 as a cadet and later transferred to the Belize Coast Guard in 2013 becoming the first woman to join the BCG. Her transfer came on the heels of her completion of studies at the US Coast Guard Academy. To maintain eligibility for further promotion within the Belize Coast Guard, she traveled to Mexico to complete officer training at the Centro de Estudios Superiores Navales (CESNAV) where she was the first woman to complete the school’s “Especialidad de Mando Naval” course. After returning from Mexico, Alma was promoted to Lieutenant and continued to pioneer the path for women in the Belize Coast Guard. Her postings include Coast Guard Liaison at the Ministry of National Security, Sector Commander for Sector Central, and, after completing the International Maritime Officers Course in 2019, Fleet Commander. Since, she has been promoted to Lieutenant Commander and is currently serving as the Acting Vice Commandant. Among her achievements is her input in the establishing of the “Women, Peace, and Security” group (WPS) in the Belizean government.
