Almost two dozen women from the Culture Capital will be taught sewing skills to empower themselves and provide for their families. This morning, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) handed over ten thousand dollars to the Dangriga Town Council for the establishment of the Wanichigu sewing school. Stann Creek Correspondent Harry Arzu tells us more.
Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: “Ten thousand Belize dollars was donated to the Wanichigu Sewing Group Training Program at a signing ceremony held here in Dangriga. Love News was at the event and spoke with the Mayor of Dangriga, Robert Mariano who implemented the sewing program.
Robert Mariano, Mayor of Dangriga: “This money will be used to have a short sewing course here in Dangriga so that we can teach single mothers to learn how to sew and to be entrepreneurs. Of course if men show up we will not turn them back, of course, but as you can see this morning it is only women that showed up to learn how to sew, or registering to learn. I have officially signed up the documents and the money has been also deposited already in the Dambria Town Council account and so the course starts as early as this Monday right there at the Dangriga Market near Why Not Island. The course is expected to last between two and three weeks and so we are encouraging people from Dangriga to show up because we have applied for this finance to teach people from Dangriga. However we have a few people from the nearby villages who have showed up and we will not turn back. Of course, at this time, the money that was approved is for 20 persons but I’m sure that I’ll be able to stretch that money to reach 30.”
Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: Chief of the Taiwan Technical Mission, Robert Pan, also spoke with us.
Robert Pan, Chief Taiwan Technical Mission, Belize: “I think this project can truly help many women and encourage this skill training so you can work in your home and teach your family.”
