Altercation Outside Belize City Supermarket Ends in Stabbing

A man was stabbed right in front of a popular Belize City supermarket over the weekend. On Friday night, 42-year-old, Windel Anthony was walking out of 88 Shopping Center on Central American Boulevard when he was approached by 37-year-old, Jermaine Grant, and the two got into an altercation. That altercation turned violent and Grant ended with several cuts over his eyes and abrasions to the head. Grant was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital while Anthony was detained by police over the incident. However, he says that Grant was the one who initially tried to stab him. Police Commissioner Chester Williams applauded the officers who were on the scene for not shooting Anthony, and said he would not have made the same decision.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The incident I must say is one that really and truly I don’t know what to say per se but I saw a situation where the police officers were doing as best as they can to detain an individual who has stabbed another and as much as the police officers were trying to apprehend that individual he was consistently resisting and trying to go after the person that he had stabbed. Obviously his intent was to kill because even as the person was lying on the ground he was there stomping the person in the head. And the police officers again while some may criticize them and say that they did not perform their duties they way they should I’m not going to go to that extent because sometimes no matter the training you have when you confront a situation you tend to forget that training and you just do what you believe can be done in that instant situation. But if it were me from the mere fact that the individual had stabbed a person, the person is on the ground and he’s constantly going after that person to try and finish off that person I would have shot him. Again the police officers who were there had weapons but they exercised great restraint and I must applaud them for that even though I would have acted differently I still endorse their action in terms of them exercising great restraint. I did not see the entire video footage. I can only speak to what I saw and I have not asked much questions about that likewise in terms of getting a full understanding of what lead to the incident so perhaps you are right I will have to check with the investigators but even if that were the case the fact that you have stabbed the man, the man is on the ground defenseless fighting for his life you have no reason to go and stomp him in the head and these sorts of things. You certainly made a right become a wrong and the police have to look at that.”

Thus far police have not reported any charges filed against either of the men.
