Residents of La Isla Bonita will now be able to access healthcare at a fraction of the cost through the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme. Today, the program was rolled out on Ambergris Caye through an agreement between the Social Security Board and two healthcare providers. The move was made possible through funding from the revenue of the state-owned and operated lotteries. Belizeans on the island can now access primary health services like general medical consultation, disease diagnosis and treatment, reproductive health, and other support services. Area Representative of Belize Rural South Andre Perez says the program’s launch in San Pedro is a milestone for the government.

Andre Perez, Area Representative, Belize Rural South: “Health is not merely a privilege, but a fundamental human right. Without health, our nation cannot thrive. As Dr. Marko Tullo Mendez has rightfully mentioned, how do we define a nation is by the health of the people? And of course, this COVID-19 pandemic starkly illustrated how intertwined health and prosperity truly are. And we saw it just recently. And the cost of healthcare has soared particularly here in our islands, not to be discriminated or biased, but it is the truth here in San Pedro. But today, we are launching NHI. We, today, are changing the narrative. So consider this. A doctor’s consultation that probably will cost $100 to $100 will now be accessible for everyone for just $10 or less. For those managing chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, expenses that perhaps could exceed as much as $500 will be drastically reduced to perhaps around $50. And of course, with free care for our seniors, as is very important, we do not forget our seniors. We are all getting there as well. We will get there. Essential tests and screenings from x-rays to mammograms will be affordable for all, especially ensuring early detection and prevention. When we started off back in November 2020, our government immediately reignited and restarted what is the NHI program. At the time, if I recall, there had been $15 million Belize allocated per annum. Today I we speak in just less than four years, this government has made a complete change around and committed to $40 million in Belize per annum for the NHI program.”
Minister of Health Kevin Bernard says the agreement will ensure residents are provided with top-notch services and described the move as a step closer to achieving universal health care.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness: “This moment marks a very important milestone in our ongoing commitment as a government to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to every member of our country, every member of this community. And as Ms. Narda rightly said, when we finish with the north side of the Belize district and the rollout of Caye Caulker we then proceed to do the Cayo District which will then see NHI across the entire country. First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of the stakeholders who have tirelessly made this partnership a reality. It is through their dedication and hard work that have laid the foundation to a healthier and stronger San Pedro. The NHI program is not just a policy. It is a promise. A promise that every resident, regardless of their economic status, socioeconomic status, will have access to primary care services that are essential for their well-being. And by signing this contract today, we are reinforcing our commitment as a government to this promise and taking a significant step towards a future where health equality, health equity is a reality for all. Our collaboration with the San Pedro primary care providers signifies our shared vision of a health care system that is comprehensive, efficient and compassionate.”
