American attached to US Coast Guard Assaulted on Ambergris Caye

An American national attached to the US Coast Guard was airlifted out of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye just after one o’clock this morning after she received stab wounds following an incident of attempted robbery.  Reports are that 26-year-old, Jennifer Smith was walking towards her hotel along the beachside alone when she was approached by a Hispanic man who demanded money from her.  She reportedly ignored the would-be robber and carried on.  As a result, the culprit attacked her from behind and inflicted a stab wound to the back of her head and another to her lower back.  Smith was rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic around midnight and was later airlifted off the island to the Belize Healthcare Partners where she was further stabilised.   Investigators are still canvassing the area and speaking to persons on the island as well as reviewing surveillance footage from nearby establishments.  The Belize Police Department has been in communication with the US Embassy in Belize to contact the victim’s family members in the US.  Just after four o’clock this evening Smith was transported home to Texas, USA via air ambulance.  Smith was vacationing in Belize with a friend but was along at the time of the incident.  She has given the investigators a statement prior to leaving the country.
