An American tourist vacationing in Belize was attacked by a crocodile on Monday night. The tourist was reportedly in the sea, somewhere south of Ambergris Caye, looking for a lost diamond earring when she was attacked. Fortunately, she survived the incident, but she is traumatized. Chris Summers from the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES) said that their next step is to try and capture the crocodile.
Chris Summers – American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES): “I have only seen pictures, I haven’t spoken to the lady and seen for myself because she is obviously quite traumatized but she sustained some bites and gashes around the shoulder and down the side of the arm where the animal had a hold of her. Obviously we don’t like to remove animals from the wild unless we have to but one like this one that was posing or showing that much aggression towards people we can’t take chances in leaving that out in the wild. We have to go out and set baited traps to try and trap the animal. Captures like this are difficult when they are in open ocean like that because he has a lot of coasts that he can patrol so I imagine it is going to take us a couple of nights for us to get him. I don’t have space to hold him so he is going to go to another organization on the mainland down south of the country who have space to take him in. We do not want to relocate him out in the wild.”
The crocodile is reportedly over ten feet long.
