An Update on Micha Miguel’s Death Investigation

The family of Micha Miguel is also calling for justice for her death. The BDF soldier was laid to rest in Hopkins Village last week. Miguel was in the force for about three years before she took her life. Her family alleges that Miguel was constantly abused while in the force. In fact, she was one of the complainants in the 2020 investigative report. She reported that she was sexually assaulted but the investigation found no evidence. Unfortunately, the abuse continued to the point that Miguel was placed on suicide watch. An investigation has been launched which included officials from the Ministry of Human Development and the Belize Police Department. From the police’s standpoint, Commissioner Chester Williams says it would be challenging to prove the sexual assault claims with Miguel no longer alive.

Chester Willams, Commissioner of Police: “That is dependent on many different factors so the probability of that occurring is going to be extremely slim. It is going to be very diffcult to pursue that angle because if there was any such sexual encounter, unwarranted sexual encounter against her, she is no longer alive. Who is going to give the story? The law requires that we have a complainant and she is not around to do that so it is going to be very difficult.”
