Anissa Perdomo Appointed New SSB Director on BTL Board

When the Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) board next convenes, it will do so with a new director representing the Social Security Board (SSB), following recent changes at the board level.  SSB has selected Anissa Perdomo, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) representative on the SSB board, to fill the vacancy created by the abrupt resignation of SSB Chairlady Chandra Nisbet Cansino. Cansino stepped down from the BTL board on the eve of the January 9 meeting, leaving the statutory body without representation at that sitting.  Perdomo’s appointment reportedly emerged from a meeting held yesterday evening, where her selection was heavily contested before she ultimately secured the position. Sources indicate that the decision may not sit comfortably with some quarters, particularly given the sensitive dynamics surrounding the BTL board and ongoing national debate over the company’s proposed acquisitions.  A respected trade unionist, Perdomo currently serves as First Vice President of the Public Service Union (PSU) and is viewed as an independent voice within labor and social security circles. Her presence on the BTL board is expected to shift the tone of discussions, particularly on matters affecting workers, governance, and public accountability.
