Anna Banner Guy has gone from a UDP City Councilor to an independent candidate in Belmopan. Guy, who began her campaign back in July, says she has been on the ground regularly, meeting with the Belmopan constituents. Guy is running under the color purple and told Love News that she is campaigning on the platform for youth inclusion and opportunities.
Anna Banner Guy, Independent Candidate: “We in Belmopan are lacking so many basic services. We’re looking at health services, educational opportunities, housing, land, equitable land distribution and those are just are just the main things. People in Belmopan are wondering how do we access these? These should be readily available but they’re not. I mean simple things like our people getting sick they are marginalized already and then they are faced with a bill to do one ultra sound and that is something that – we have a regional hospital and it’s a shame that our regional hospital were lacking this basic service and the poor people are the ones suffering the most because it’s not affordable for us to access these services when the government lacks these basic essential services. Our people we’re at a risk our health, our education, basic survival, livelihood and so those are the things that my manifesto talk about. What is the difference between my plan and the plans my opponents is that my campaign is focusing on people. We have a people centered campaign, we have a people centered and people focused plan that is geared towards targeting our most valuable resource which is our human resource. If we empower our people our families become more self sustainable and our communities then would be more developed and more functional as a more socially acceptable community. We have seen a rise in crime in Belmopan and this is coming from a lack of basic opportunities primarily from our young people and so instead of targeting our young people as criminals we would like to provide them with opportunities that would steer them in the right direction and away from those kinds of activities that are not socially acceptable.”
The Belmopan constituency has been known as a UDP stronghold with John Saldivar winning elections in that area over the last 12 years. His long term in office, however, has not phased Guy in her aspirations to take over the division.
Anna Banner Guy, Independent Candidate: “I am feeling the way our electorates are feeling and they have been explaining to me and I’ve been on the ground for a while so I’ve been in constant communication with my people here in Belmopan and it’s a sick and tired. Everyone is saying basically the same thing “We’re sick and tired of the same PUDP system.” and we want a change in Belmopan we’re standing up for a change and Belmopan people are serious about this because they look me in the eye and they’re saying this to me and so our campaign team is energized, we’re very organized. Like I said I have been working in Belmopan. Voters are looking to align themselves with the candidate that fits better into what they’re looking for in terms of their character and their values, deliverables. They want a candidate that can deliver the plan, they want a candidate that they can trust, a candidate that they’re familiar with and a candidate that has a proven track record in Belmopan, that is only one of us and so I’m not too concerned about my opponents neither are the electorate and that is where our campaign is standing on today. So we’re focused on winning because I’m running to win obviously and Belmopan is focused on bringing a change for themselves because people are hungry out here they’re hungry for good leadership.”
Tonight, Guy will be presenting her manifesto via a virtual event. The event will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube and begins at 7:30.
