The second murder victim’s body was found hours after he had been killed. 37-year-old Juan David Mendez was stabbed not too far from where Daniel Cano was murdered. According to a resident, Mendez was visiting the home of his brother when he heard another man having an argument with the brother. He tried to intervene, and was injured in the process. His brother attempted to call out for help, but the assailant threatened his life as well. This caused Mendez’s brother to flee for his life. Later that morning, around 8am, Mendez’s other brother and nephew found his body in the yard. According to Mendez’s cousin, who wished to remain anonymous, this was not the first time his life had been threatened.
Cousin: “The first time they tried to chop him right there at the Chinese store, then after that the second time they tried to run at him to try to kill him and this is the third time they are doing things to him. I know him, he used to work, he didn’t mess with anyone, he didn’t like to go fight with anybody he didn’t like to get into trouble with anybody. I knew him well, he is my cousin and now he is dead. He was friendly but I don’t know if he had any problems with the man who stabbed him, I don’t know but like my dad told me he knew that man I don’t know why that man came after him to do him that; he was not supposed to kill my cousin like that way, he killed my cousin like a dog and nobody can support that because he didn’t have a dad, he only had a mom but he is distant with his mom and he doesn’t like to do anything at his mom sometimes he goes to the other side, he would bring his flour for his mom he would do everything. He lived right there at the cement house in front of the Presbytarian School but he came and stay a night with her other brother named Daniel; after that I saw him last week Friday and I spoke to him and he told me ‘Rosa, are you alright ?’ I told him ‘Yes’ that was the only conversation I made with him last week Friday. He worked hard for his money, didn’t mess with anyone, he didn’t steal from anyone.”
The assailant is reportedly from Libertad Village in Corozal. Like Cano, Mendez had no children.
