The Agriculture and Natural Resources Institute (ANRI) in the Stann Creek District is on a drive to increase the number of students attending the institution. The school was opened as the Jesuit institution Linam Agriculture College in 1953, the school was rebranded as ANRI in 1999. Apart from the strong agricultural base, students at the institution are also engaged in a number of social programs. The school’s principal, Victoria Gongora, says that the current enrollment is just under 60 students, but she is hoping that the community will see the school as a viable option. She spoke to Love News about the benefits of attending the institution.
Gongora says that what is needed is a cultural shift in the way agriculture is viewed. She feels that this shift will come when more people realize that agriculture actually utilizes a lot of science and technology.
Enrolling at ANRI is free as the school benefits from the free education programme sponsored by the Ministry of Education.
