There is a new Chief Environmental Officer and his name is Anthony Mai. Mai replaces Martin Alegria whose retirement was announced in November 2021. During the transition Alegria’s responsibilities was split into two. Mai was placed in charge of Project Evaluation/Environmental Assessment Unit and Edgar Ek was given the responsibility of the department’s administration, the Project Execution Unit, the Information Management Unit and the Environmental Management Fund. Mai’s appointment doesn’t come as a surprise as the Public Service Union was anticipating the move*. *The government says that Mai has over 15 years’ experience working with the department, most recently as the senior environmental officer. He possesses a graduate degree with concentration in sustainable development from Galen University and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Belize. His combination of experience and academic qualifications is expected to aid in bridging the environment-development nexus in Belize.
