An anti-contraband operation was conducted at a residence in San Victor Village, Orange Walk district over the weekend. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, border jumping and contraband continue and the police department is trying to control the issue. This operation on Saturday saw a hostile reaction from the villagers as explained by Senior Superintendent Joseph Myvette.
ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “As a result the officers requested for additional support which did arrive some forty five minutes later where the situation was quelled and eight persons including a minor was taken into custody. Those eight persons are believed to be from one family and in answering to your query at no point was any weapon taken away from those four officers. An investigation was carried out where police levied charges on those individuals who are Benjamin, Edwardo, Anatolia, Hilberto, Arjeni, Victor Sr., Victor Jr, Emilio and a seventeen year old minor all for the offences of obstruction, aggravated assault, common assault and indecent words. They ought to appear in court today in relation to that. What I must also mention that the police is going to continue to maintain a strong presence in that area in order to deter those who are involved in the contraband trade.”
