In light of the devastation and unprecedented wildfire season, the Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (APAMO) issued a call for action and accountability. The entity says “Historically, wildfires have predominantly affected pine ridge and open savannahs. However, this year has seen a devastating impact on communities, livelihoods, broadleaf forests, and several key protected areas across our nation.” APAMO noted that while some fires have been non-preventable due to natural causes, it has been reported that several fires have been deliberately set by farmers. The group says the individuals have ignored the increased risk posed by such actions during this critical period and, disturbingly, there are indications that some farmers have also exploited this natural disaster for personal gain, intentionally burning large areas to clear land for purposes other than farming. APAMO is calling on the relevant government authorities to thoroughly investigate these incidents and hold those responsible accountable. Additionally, the NGO notes that is imperative to enforce appropriate policies and regulations to stop such deliberate acts and to protect our natural resources for future generations. APAMO also commended the efforts of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and its member organizations aiding in the fight. ///
