Area Rep for Lake I comments on Gertrude Hunter Situation

The land dispute of sixty-one-year-old, Gertrude Hunter, landed her in court yesterday on several charges including assaulting a police officer. It’s a complicated family issue where both sides of the divide say they’ve got documents proving ownership of the land. However, Hunter says she has repeatedly been accosted by police over the issue. We asked Area Representative for Lake Independence, Cordel Hyde, about the issue.  He says he doesn’t think the police should have been so involved in the issue. /

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Prime Minister:  “Ultimately the police ought not to be in the business of evicting anybody from their homes. You can’t be evicted from your home unless you get a court order. So the police I suspect is acting on some friendship kind of thing, that’s not how it works. Ultimately there’s a process you have to go through to get someone evicted from a house and as I said I don’t know all the details but I will find out and try to see how best for us to remedy that because that should not be happening, not in this day and age. There has to be a process of working things out and we’ve tried as best we can to provide land for first time land owners like we’ve really gone hard at that. Lots of sleepless nights, lots of late nights with our staff from the lands department working over time to try to ensure that we provide lands for our people. We can’t really keep up with the demand but I off the top of my head I would say that the police have a lot of other more pressing matters to deal with and I don’t know that that is one of them.”

Hunter was charged with one count of trespassing in premises, one count of damage to property, and two counts of aggravated assault. She is currently out on bail valued at a thousand dollars and is due back in court on March 18.
