Arrest Warrant Issued: Former Coast Guard Seaman Fails to Appear in Court

The Belize High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of former Belize Coast Guard Seaman, 33-year-old Keyren Tzib, after she failed to show up to court today. Tzib was found guilty of attempted murder on March 13 for the 2015 shooting of her fellow seaman Kurt Hyde. She was still out on bail and was to return to court today for her sentencing hearing but after an hour and fifteen minutes, the proceedings began without her. Her mother, Alicia Tzib, was at the courthouse and told Justice Candace Nanton that her daughter was ill. However, there were no medical documents to support that claim. Justice Nanton said that Tzib not showing up for court breached the conditions of her bail, which is valued at fifteen thousand dollars. While Tzib is represented by attorney Darrel Bradley, Arthur Saldivar joined her legal team today. Outside the courtroom, Saldivar described the situation as unfortunate, since Tzib was a rising star in the Belize Coast Guard.

Arthur Saldivar, Attorney at Law: “Ms.Tzib is still represented by Mr.Bradley and his firm. I have come on to assist, join the team so to speak, with a view to giving Ms.Tzib as man options as possible going forward. Now as you know Ms.Tzib was convicted of attempt murder in court on the 13th of March and there were certain conditions imposed on her for bail extended to a convicted person. Given her state emotionally and psychologically and given the voluminous conditions she was unable to fulfill and was found in breach. As a result bail was revoked today pending sentencing on the 10th of May. We are now in a position now where we are preparing submissions on the 10th of May. As you know this is a very tragic situation. Ms.Tzib was a shining light for the Coast Guard as one of the first females to join and not only that but her academic acumen and capacity being as high as it was she was on a trajectory to do great things in that institution. It’s unfortunate that the institution that she chose to serve actually marshaled itself against her to bring about the very unfortunate incident that there should be a responsibility for having.”

The court records showed that Tzib had not been signing in on Mondays as part of her bail conditions. While she showed up to an interview to conduct her Social Inquiry Report, Tzib did not participate in the interview process so the report could not be done. Justice Nanton has ordered a psychiatric report be prepared for Tzib, which will be considered in sentencing. The sentencing hearing was adjourned until May 10.
