Artist defends vendor from robbers

Alex Sanker was dubbed a hero on social media today as he singlehandedly attacked to robbers who were assaulting a tamales vendor this morning.

Alex Sanker was dubbed a hero on social media today as he singlehandedly attacked to robbers who were assaulting a tamales vendor this morning.  Sanker, who is known for his art works, was inside his house painting when he heard a commotion happening just outside his house door in Rhaburn Alley, Belize City. When he went to investigate what was happening, he saw the two robbers beating on a man who was on bicycle with his bucket of tamales.  Sanker says he heard the cries for help and upon checking he grabbed one of his wooden easels to beat the robbers.  Sanker spoke to Love News on the incident.

Alex Sanker, Artist: “I want to make it clear I’m a law abiding citizen. I didn’t get up this morning saying I was going to be violent but you have an honest – I used to sell like that man when I was younger my mom used to send me to sell tamales, ducunu all kinds of things so I know the struggle and things are hard out here. People have to stop finding excuse everybody is feeling the pinch, things are rough, that does not give you the right to beat down an honest hard working individual, a brother of mine, a Belizean brother selling tamales and come all the way from north. I did everything exactly what I did and if something worse would have happened to me I would still not have any regrets because I did what I did what the heart told me was right. What I want these robbers to bear in mind I have a lot to live for and if it was ten of them out there I would have reacted the same way. Like I said a lot of them come through this alley and see my paintings when I do display I do a lot of good for this country but I’m not gonna walk around on no egg shell meaning at the end of the day if you fear that’s your enemy. You just have to be realistic there’s only so much we could do as human being. So my thing is I’m going to continue my life as normal and just be more cautious of what’s going on here because at the end of the day we all know this is a serious matter but like I said I’m not going to change nothing about my way of life, I’m going to continue being Alex Sanker Artist and the rest I leave in God’s hands.”

Sanker, who says he would willingly identify the criminals, noted that while crime fighting is everyone’s business so is Covid-19.

Love News understands that several person have been detained following this morning’s incident.
