Association of Defence Attorneys Challenges Mandatory Jail Time for Gun Offenses

The Association of Defence Attorneys (ADA) is preparing to challenge the 90-day mandatory jail time for gun offences.  Senior Attorney Dickie Bradley spoke on behalf of the ADA, saying that the mandatory lockup is unjust and that it infringes on the rights of the accused.

Under the Firearms Act, all persons present when illegal or unlicensed firearms and/or ammunition are found, could be arrested.  Based on the Act, such an offence carries a 5-year mandatory imprisonment if found guilty.
