CWU EFFECTS 1

At what cost ?

Since the strike began with the stevedores, there have been trickling effects on other parties including the Port of Belize and other shipping companies. Love News spoke to Arturo Vasquez and he explained the domino effect that the strike has caused leaving the companies crippled.

Since the strike began with the stevedores, there have been trickling effects on other parties including the Port of Belize and other shipping companies. Love News spoke to Arturo Vasquez and he explained the domino effect that the strike has caused leaving the companies crippled.

Reporter: How has that affected your customers?

Arturo Vasquez, CEO, Port of Belize: “Not only customers but financially there is a lot of loss there but yeah of course that has affected everything, the business community, everything. From what we understand now there are some ships that were coming that perhaps decided not to come over the weekend and everything is simply because we have not been able to give any guarantees as to where we are. It is so unfortunately because the priority here is really the importance of getting the port back up and running and I believe that these things should be considered and dealt with properly. I think we lost a week and hopefully we’re back to normal now.”

Love News also got an insight from one of the Stevedores who told Love News that he has no other alternative once all else fails.

Ralston McDonald, Stevedore: “Well right now not only me but the whole country is taking a licking you understand and these guys like they’ve been pushing us around for quite a while. You know I’ve been a stevedore for over twenty years since I came back from the states so – I have a broken service but twenty years is still a lot. Our job stevedores this is a part of the south side poverty alleviation project here because not only my family eats from my paper a lot of families eat from my paper you understand – friends. Some people that I don’t even know ‘Please give me a dollar.’ sometimes they get two or three depending on how the paper is flowing.”

Reporter: If all else fails do you have an alternative ? Let’s just say this all doesn’t work out in your favor, do you have a plan?

Ralston McDonald, Stevedore: “Well the whole country will feel not only me the whole country because when the selves start to get peel, because the shelf there is already empty. They had fun yesterday, we tried to work with this cat right ?”

Since the memorandum has been signed, it is now in the negotiation stage between both parties. Love News will continue to follow this story.
